Come And Get It (Part II)

Been listening to this album non stop lately. I have to stand by my comments that CAGI (Can "CAGI" actually be a better album title already? Sigh.) is the album of 2005. And I'll tell you why. First, song by song.

So Good.
Lame title. But brilliant 2nd single. Decent album opener? Perhaps. I can understand why this single wasn't huge when it was released. Apart from being a brilliant pop song with strong beats and lame lyrics there's just nothing special about this song. But it's brilliant already in the first place. And that's so good, pun intended.

Crazy Boys.
Another lame title. Can it get any worse you ask? Well, later you get 'Some Girls' and 'Dumb Dumb'. So drop it already, since this is not a song naming contest. One of the strongest track in my opinion, should've been the first single, no doubt about it. Stomping beats and lovely chorus that Rachel can mime to. Very retro. Perfect for a 70s dance routine, with a 'Maybe' treatment that gaurantees nothing but success in the charts. Think about costumes. A circus theme? Throw in some dancers, a tiger or two, and a stupid story line and there you go - a fantastic video to a hit. Oh well no wonder everyone thinks record company secs are stupid.

Je M'Appelle.
I don't really get this song. Hate the chorus. So let's move on to the next -

I Said Never Again (But Here We Are).
As they say this song talks about 'backdoor'. I don't really believe it's meant to be about that though. Call me innocent. But it very well can be. I just don't believe that. The song itself is too retro for my liking. But still listenable. Not fully danceable though. That's why there's no dance routine for this. Sad choice for 3rd single single.

Nothing Good About This Goodbye.
Should we call this a 'cover'? Since Alexis Strum recorded it but never released it but everybody's listened the original already and thinks it's brilliant and everybody expects Rachel to top that.

It's a more natural affair for Alexis Strum's version. Vocals that's more superior and production that is easier on the ears. Somehow for Rachel's version the introduction gets a little too annoying. Maybe a title like 'Fembot vs Robot mix' would grant this new version more credit for that matter. Vocals not really up to par, but one good thing is I like Rachel's voice alone better. Fembot, but quite likable honestly. This new version does take off at the chorus too. More powerful and more layers of vocals perhaps? And the guitar bridge is just bloody brilliant.

And it's because of the whole manufactured quality to her recordings people may diss her for being talentless. Well, people don't get it - manufactured can also be fun at the same time. They're not here for their talents in the first place. How sad that people still don't see it and still idolize this thing called 'talent'.

Some Girls.
Old stuff. Odd inclusion, dont' really fit in. It's there because it was a hit. Oh well. It does sound great as an individual track though.

Dumb Dumb.
Now that's some serious business here. Took me less than 5 seconds to decide it's brilliant. You expect nothing from the dumb title, but what lies underneath is the perfect incarnation of pop.

Every Little Thing.
Another nice tune. You can't go wrong when you have a catchy intro plus an uptempo chorus with a twist.

Funny How.
Perfect slice of pop. It's just so well crafted. My current favorite.

Negotiate With Love.
First single that everybody thinks is not single material but I think it's perfectly fine.

Secret Garden.
Originally a rather annoying one but getting used to it.

It's All About Me.
Love the chorus. See, an album filler can be decent and great too. This is the perfect example how the supposedly unnoticeable track 12 can be, and should be great, and why people should buy buy buy this album.

I Will Be There.
Nice closing track. Dreamy. A dreamy closing tune can never go wrong.

All in all I never expected this album to be that good. When Negotiate With Love was released I thought that was it - Rachel's gonna be huge finally - but she didn't. When So Good leaked I knew something's wrong cuz So Good was supposed to be the second strongest track but obviously it's not strong enough. I Said Never Again might have a bigger appeal but it's the 3rd single afterall and you can tell people are starting to lose interest. I was losing interest too.

But then the rest of the album is just a surprise. The whole marketing effort for this album is just wrong. And Polydor is still keeping Rachel because they know they owe her this. She's made a really great record but nobody else is giving her credit for it.

Morals:

1. It is indeed quite rude to laugh at somebody's face and especially if that someone is talking in front of you even though that someone could be 50 feet away. don't kid yourself, your face is still in public display.

2. when one sheep jumps down the cliff, another follows. then another does the same. so on and so forth. do human beings do the same? Not literally perhaps. But think for yourself. One sheep laughs, the other follows. Etc etc. That's how rule 1 came in important.

3. wearing bright colour, in today's standards, is not a wise choice anymore. people would mistake you as an attention seeker.

4. when people can't let go of things so minor and trivial, you know there are bigger things these people are clinging on to (which only makes sense). therefore putting the blame on them may not be a kind option. be kind.

5. for every venture there should be a line drawn beforehand. crossing the line is always dangerous.

6. getting a hair cut right before the CNY holidays is not a good idea. I want a refund.

And among other things...

a worried patient who's being colonoscoped after being told there's a tumor beginning to throw up and who attempts to use his own hand to withdraw the scope by himself due to extreme discomfort AND anxiety is just an unsightly scene. :(

Been thinking of making some changes to my blog. Don't know when I'll be ready though. Maybe I should write something different. Something more interesting. Something more personal, and something more that's NOT about me at the same time. Watch out for changes, from contents to layout to my stupid blog title. What was I thinking to come up with that, I don't know. But hey, that was so many years ago.
